>> i'm matt lauer. this latest conflict is now a week old. the president has decided to take a steep step. he's sending in the secretary of state. >> she's on a plane headed to israel in an attempt to push the cease-fire talks along. we'll get a live report on all of it in just a moment. also ahead, more on the severe weather front that is pummeling the pacific northwest. it turned deadly overnight. we're going to have more on that story as well. >> then she's been called a real-life sleeping beauty but this is no fairy tale. it's a serious condition. a 17-year-old girl who suffers from a rare disorder. it causes her to sleep, sometimes for months on end. we'll talk to her and her doctor about that. >> and we have a very excited crowd out on the plaza. kesha is here for a live performance, part of an unbelievable thanksgiving week of concerts outside. and we'll get to that in our 8:30 half hour. but we begin on this tuesday morning with the violence in the middle east and the breaking news overnight that secretary of state hillary clinton is now headed to that region.

we have two reports from richard engle le i engel in gaza and chuck todd traveling with the president in cambodia. chuck, we'll start with you. >> good morning. this originally had been phone diplomacy the president had been practicing during the gaza conflict. almost on the phone daily with prime minister netanyahu of israel, egyptian president morsi. over the last 24 hours, the president was on the phone until 2:30 in the morning last night back and forth between president morsi and prime minister netanyahu. after those phone calls, he and secretary clinton huddled together. the decision was made to send secretary clinton in person so she heads to jerusalem. she's in the air now. that will be her first stop. one on one meetings with netanyahu. then off to ramallah, the palestinian authority. of course, no direct talks with hamas. the united states does not deal directly with terrorist organizations. then it's off to cairo and a meet with president morsi because it is the egyptian president that is the liaison if

you will in these talks with hamas. the goal here is to create space, buy time to try to see if they can prevent israel from doing a full-fledged ground invasion. seeing if they can get some sort of temporary cease-fire to create room for a more negotiated settlement. shuttle diplomacy is back. >> what about the risk/reward. if she accomplishes something, then that's a great feather in her cap and the administration's. but if she doesn't, does she come off as being ineffective? >> well, there is a risk to this. i talked to the white house aides. i said, look, are you sendinger in because you think there's something precooked that they have a possibility of basically pushing this over the finish line, getting it done and they admitted they're not there. they do feel as if it is needed to sort of nudge things along. you are right, politically, this could be a great way for secretary clinton to finish her four-year tenure at the state department. there's been some talk she's not had that one big moment. this would be a big moment, if

she's the one that's there making this cease-fire happen. but there is a down side. if it doesn't happen and suddenly a full-fledged ground invasion, it's a whole new ball game. >> chuck todd in cambodia. thank you very much. with more on this, here's savannah. >> the secretary of state's trip to the region comes with the fighting between israel and hamas showing no signs of stopping overnight. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in gaza this morning. good morning. >> good morning. as you said, as diplomacy is continuing, so is the fighting. a short while ago, the overall hamas military commander gave a speech on local television telling his men to be patient and to keep fighting. and already today more than 60 rockets have been fired from here into israel. from here into israel and israel has carried out many air strikes. a truce may be coming, but the destruction in gaza hasn't even slowed down. this was the main branch of the

only bank that distributed funds from the hamas government. >> israel says right now that the reason it's carrying out these attacks is because the rockets are still coming. >> i don't think that a rocket comes from this building. >> israel aps targeted the bank overnight along with some ten homes of alleged palestinian militants. in this one, two children were killed this morning. one of their teddy bears still lie necessary a crater. but are these the last lick before a cease-fire? dip low moot mats in cairo say there could be a break through, perhaps even today. hamas wants an immediate cease-fire and the lifting of travel and trade restrictions on the gaza strip. israel wants hamas to stop firing all rockets first for 24 to 48 hours and then negotiate the details. but unlike gaza, israel can afford to wait a bit longer. it's not paying the same daily price because of israel's iron dome anti-rocket system.

nbc's martin fletcher got an exclusive look at the iron dome in action. >> we enjoy the iron dome, which is a huge success. and luckily -- >> there's a siren now. >> let's see what happens. >> it will only fire -- >> the system calculates which rockets will hit an inhabited area and knox it out like here and ignores all others. but it fails two, missing about two out of ten, officials say, making life scary. children in bomb shelters for the sixth straight day. i'm afraid of the sirens, 7-year-old rami says. there's another siren. we're just going into the shelter. and just as we left -- i'm not sure how many rockets have been fired right now, but the iron dome one, two, three, four iron dome rockets are exploding. we'll see what damage it did. five rockets fired from gaza,

four intercepted, one got through and fell in a garden. beyond the dome, israel has also deployed combat troops along gaza's border, threatening to invade if talks fail. also today, an israeli man wielding an ax and a knife attacked an israeli security guard outside the gates of the u.s. embassy in tel aviv. an embassy spokesman says that the situation has been contained. savannah. >> richard engle in gaza. thank you. it's the latest shocking twist in the deadly explosion that nearly leveled an indian atlas neighborhood earlier this month. now authorities are saying it appears to be no accident. kevin tibbles is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, it's been just over a week since the deadly explosion rocked this indianapolis neighborhood. two people dead, more than 80 homes either destroyed or damaged. well, now the authorities here are calling this a homicide investigation.

it was a sad scene at a double funeral in indianapolis monday. >> yeah. very sad. it just seems like such a waste of wonderful people to die so young. >> reporter: hundreds came to pay their respects to john and jennifer longworth, the couple killed in a november so e explosion that destroyed five homes and damaged dozens. the couple lived next door to the house that investigators believe was the center of the explosion. late monday, city officials made a startling announcement. >> at this time, we are here to inform you we are turning this into a criminal investigation. >> the longworths lived next door to a house owned by monseray shirley. her boyfriend had recently replaced the thermostat on a malfunctioning thermos at the house. she and her boyfriend were not

as home at the time of the blast. late monday night, the couple's attorney released a statement which read in part, monserrate shirley and mark leonard watched in be wilderment the news report that the authorities are now treating the investigation as a criminal investigation as well as a caution ailgation search. the two remain horrified at the destruction and loss of lives that occurred. they have cooperated fully with various investigators and agencies on multiple occasions and answered each and every question including speculation as to whether they may have been targeted by anyone. >> if, in fact, investigators believe that explosion was intentional as opposed to accidental, it was either targeted towards the residents of that house or targeted against the house itself, perhaps for insurance purposes or some other reason. >> investigators monday urged witnesses to come forward with information about a white van seen in the neighborhood. specifically, if anyone has

information about a white van seen in the subdivision on the day of the explosion and about the occupants of those van, we urge you to contact crime stoppers. >> today, investigators will be searching through the rubble in search of any clue that may lead them to the person responsible or perhaps a motive. matt. >> kevin, thanks very much. we want to turn and get the day's other top stories. natalie morales is at the news desk. >> good morning, everyone. powerful storms in the pacific northwest have turned deadly overnight. drenching rains and strong wind gusts knocked over trees and trucks, cutting power to some 20,000 people and flooding neighborhoods in seattle. on the oregon coast, a hunter was killed when a tree fell on his tent. four americans are facing terror charges, accused of plotting to join al qaeda & taliban to kill fellow americans overseas. the four men appeared in a los angeles federal court monday. if convicted, they could each

here. as nbc news discovered, data like this is now being sold by cybercriminals on the internet black market. >> it may be one of the most alarming cybercrimes yet. >> south carolina has come under attack by an international hacker. >> reporter: governor hailey was furious. >> i mean, i want that man just brutalized. >> reporter: an unknown cyberattacker believed to be in russia infiltrated south carolina's tax computers and stole huge amounts of personal data. 3.8 million social security numbers. nearly 400,000 credit and debit card numbers. 650,000 business tax returns. michael debose, a former federal computer crime expert calls it a massive security breach. >> for an identity thief when you can get both social security numbers and all the other information on a tax return, that's a jackpot. >> our actual bank account and routing numbers.

>> reporter: they discovered $4,000 in fraudulent out of state charges to the same bank account they use to pay state taxes for their catering business. >> we had to close out the business account. we had to close out credit cards. we had to close out debit cards. we had basically shut down our entire financial situation. >> reporter: the couple has now joined a class action lawsuit alleging state officials were negligent in protecting taxpayer data. >> you must have a lot of furious taxpayers in this state. >> and rightfully so. you know, this is information that is private. even though you can't see this criminal, they are there, and they are waiting. >> reporter: what happens to this stolen personal data? nbc asked cybersleuth debose to show us the black market. what he says looks like a russian site offering u.s. credit cards. >> they are selling both the data that's on the magnetic strip on the back of the card, which is a lot of personal information, as well as the pin number. >> michael brown has joined the

chat. >> this guy offered 83 credit cards for $9 each. even gave us a sample. what's spelled fullz, full information, including social security numbers. and when we asked to buy credit cards from south carolina, there was this. yes, i have south carolina, the seller types, adding a smiley face. and confirms he has fullz. >> now governor hailey has arranged for the state to spend up to $12 million to offer a full year of credit protection for all state residents and nearly 800,000 have signed up so far. but security experts say this attack has exposed more vulnerabilities in the cyberdefenses. south carolina like many states has never encrypted those social security numbers found on the tax returns and now in the hands of the hackers. savannah? >> really scary. michael isikoff, thank you. >> if you are traveling for the holiday rush, you are hitting

nicole delien looks dazed and confused but awake and is even having a conversation with her mother vicky. >> you know this isn't your fault, right? >> i guess. >> reporter: but nicole is actually in the middle of a sleep that lasted 64 days. >> why you are you yawning? >> i don't know. >> reporter: nicole suffers from a rare condition called kleine-levein syndrome. she can sleep for 11 hours a day, two months at a time, getting up to go to the bathroom or eat. >> it's hard for people becauan don't like it when people call it a fairy tale because it's not a fairy tale. >> reporter: teen has slept through birthdays, vacations and even a katy perry concert.

once slept from thanksgiving all the way to christmas. her mother says the condition has affected the entire family. >> is nicole going to be asleep or with the family this year? only been awake since three christmases since she was born. >> reporter: experts think it's a malfunction of the brain that affects sleep. >> i don't think it's a pure disorder. i think it's a manifestation of some brain malfunction. >> reporter: as for that katy perry concert, nicole may have slept through it but the pop star didn't take it personally. perry heard about nicole's story and invited her to another show and back to her dressing room. as nicole grows older she hopes to have more and more good memories like that one. >> once i was able to go away like in your late 20s, i hope for that because i would like to enjoy life.

>> reporter: nicole does take medicine to cut down on her episodes. hasn't suffered for one since last march but always lives in fear wondering when the next one could strike. savannah? >> andrea, thank you. nicole is here with her mother and doctor who diagnosed her. good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> nicole, i will start with you. i was saying before you look a little sleepy. are you okay? >> i'm okay, just tired. >> the last time you had a really big episode was march, right? >> mm-hmm. >> do you feel when it's coming on, do you know when it's about to happen? >> i just get really tired. >> you have fallen asleep, the longest was for 64 days? >> yeah. that's the longest. >> do you remember anything about what happens during those periods of time? >> no, i don't remember what happens. >> we showed that video of you that your mom took. was that surprising when you saw it? >> mm-hmm. >> how did it make you feel? >> it made me upset.

>> one of the things most upset begun this is waking up and realizing everything you've missed. is that hard to contend with? >> mm-hmm. >> vicky, when this started happening, nicole was 6 or 7 years old? >> 6 1/2. >> did you have any idea that something like this existed? >> we had no idea. we at the beginning thought that maybe she had the flu because she had flu-like symptoms and a high fever, but then she just became, as the days progresses, she became more confused and didn't know what was going on, more lethargic as well. >> a lot of people wonder really if you're going to sleep for these periods of time how you could survive. i know she gets up to go to the bathroom but does she get enough to eat? >> there's been times when we've had to take her back and forth to the hospital to get rehydrated and an iv for other nutrients as well. i do wake her up and try to feed

her. when she's in the episode she craves for maybe a certain food or what not so i'll even try to bribe her, if you drink this amount of water or eat this, then i'll go get you what you want. >> nicole, how do you keep up with schoolwork? >> well, they just mark it off, and i just go with the classes. >> doctor, we call this sleeping, but is that really the right way to think about it? is it more kind of a delirious state? >> it's really not sleeping and it's not a sleeping beauty. if anybody's ever had, you know, come out of anesthesia or had an elderly family member who has had surgery and gets confused and talks out of their mind, that's basically what this is. it is a delirium. >> this is something that occurred usually in at lessents, most predominantly in young boys, as i understand it. is it something we can expect her to grow out of? >> well, she's at the mean

back at 7:43. teenage boys working out to impress girls is not anything new, but a new report finds the quest for the perfect body is putting more boys at risk than ever before. nbc's rehema ellis has more on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: thanks, matt. fonzy from "happy days" will always be cool and that body tape is popular, many want the lean body look of their favorite action heros and they are developing dangerous habits to get there. for generations parents have worried about girls taking extreme measures to get thin, but now with more and more popular images of trim, chiseled guys, boys are starting to measure up to the muscular luck. this high school senior lifts

weight two hours a day six days a week. he started body building three years ago when he was just 15 years old. >> guys have the same exact pressure as the girls. >> reporter: at 5 feet 125 pounds david counts every calorie and consumes protein drinks and bars. and david is not alone. increasingly high school and even middle school boys as young as 14 years old are taking potentially dangerous measures to get the buffed look >> the health problems are great in interference with regular growth and development, an abnormal building of muscle mass can interfere with normal metabolic function, normal endocrine development. >> reporter: researchers found that 40% of boys studied in middle school and high school said that they regularly exercised to increase muscle mass. nearly 35% said they used protein supplements. almost 6% said they had

experimented with steroids. douglas reported the story for the "new york times." he says that while the study focused mostly on boys, results also pointed to a new trend in young women. >> strong is the new skinny, yeah. that speaks to how this sort of quest for muscularity have moved over to women as well. not looking to be thin anymore and women want to be thin and toned with six pack abs. >> reporter: david says the supplements and strict workout regiment have given him more confidence. >> and what keeps me going, the look, every time i work out i feel like i'm getting stronger and i want to keep going and look the best i can. >> reporter: experts worry that if teenagers focus too much on protein supplementser they are excluding other important nutrients. >> as a father of an

if you've ever been to san francisco you know it's a place where pretty much anything goes and late err today that might change a bit when the san francisco board of supervisors plans to vote for a ban on public nudity. nbc's mike taibbi is nude there. >> no! >> sorry, looking at the preview monitor. take it away. >> reporter: not a chance, matt and savannah. i know you're trying to hold on to your audience of women and children so that won't be happening. what they are going to be voting on is a new ordinance to ban public nudity. hard to imagine in this city, as savannah said, it all started in the castro district which was the epicenter of the gay liberation movement where some are saying too many men have been liberating themselves of their clothing in ways that are over the line. lloyd fishback says he's been walking around totally nude for

years and that others have been gathering daily at this castro district plaza. a dozen or more men on many days, minus their clothing, for the same reasons he does it. why would anybody want to walk around buck naked in public? >> freedom. acceptance, freedom. to be free. >> reporter: this is a neighborhood whose mantra of live and let live does invite free expression. >> i'm like, whatever. bodies are bodies. >> reporter: but other residents and merchants of the district have had enough claiming the parade of the unclothed is bad for business. >> i'm getting letters from customers who regret that they can no longer shop here because they can't bring their children down here. >> reporter: local community groups pressed for the new law because, as rob cox puts it, a public park is no place for private parts. >> reporter: and it became more about exhibitionism than nudity and it became a nudist colony here and one of the few public spaces for the neighborhood. most of the people who we spoke

to who support the ban have nothing against nudity per se, even public nudity but there seems to be a but attached, pun intended, from just about all of this. this supervisor wrote the ordinance and held off for two years until he was convinced that all that nudity invades the privacy of the public unwillingly exposed to such conduct. >> i waited for almost two years because i didn't want to go there, but it got to the point where i felt i had no choice that. it had gotten to the extreme is that for years public nudity has been a fact of san francisco life at parades, festivals and other events. that won't change. but this might. superintendent weiner says he's got the votes to get the ordinance passed which means if you're looking for that all-over tan, matt and savannah, maybe the middle of the cass try district is not the place to get it. back to you. >> mike, thanks very much. a very fine line between freedom and in some cases a little bit of creepy exhibitionism. >> where do you keep your

train when it hit the person. that happened about 5:35 this morning. no passengers or crew members were injured. so for the latest on that commute and how this will impact the commute, let's check in with mike inouye. >> good morning, jon. trains are moving through the area. first we have the wet roadways and i'll talk about that in a second but we do want to tell you the transit status. trains are single tracking through palo alto. northbound train 103 is on scene and they have to continue the investigation. the bus bridge has been cancelled because trains are coming through the area very slowly. 10 miles per hour so expect delays through that portion of the peninsula and likely throughout the system anyway. we're looking at that area as far as the impact on the tracks. the roadways are slowing in both directions through palo alto, a pretty typical build, but especially south 280. an accident just clearing still has a backup coming off of 92. slower as well approaching the bay bridge toll plaza down the east shore freeway, a little wet there and here's oakland north paf the coliseum.

hillary clinton was dispatched overnight on an emergency mission to the middle east. a week of fighting between israel and palestinian militants in gaza has led to fears of an all-out war that could send civilian casualties soaring even higher. the white house says secretary clinton will meet in person with israeli prime minister netanyahu and palestinian officials before traveling to egypt to meet leaders there. united nations chief ban ki-moon has also traveled to the region pleading for an immediate cease-fire. the house explosion that killed two neighbors and leveled dozens of homes in indianapolis this month is now being investigated as a criminal homicide case. officials are appealing to the public for information about a white van seen in the area. the people who live in the house that blew up were not at home at the time. the suspects have been named -- no suspects have been named in the case. 97 house republicans have sent a letter to president obama declaring that u.n. ambassador susan rice should be disqualified as a candidate for secretary of state because they say she misled the nation about

the attack on the american consulate in libya. rice said just after the september attack that it grew out of a spontaneous protest rather than an act of terrorism, but she was speaking based on the intelligence briefing she had been provided at the time. a hearing is scheduled for today in los angeles over the future of "modern family" star ariel winter. last month the 14-year-old was temporarily removed from her mother's custody and placed with an adult sister. court filings allege that winter's mother chris workman is physically and emotionally abusive, accusations workman denies. winter's father said monday that he wants a better relationship with his daughter and would be willing to raise her. now for a look at what's trending today. our quick roundup of what has you talking online. newark, new jersey mayor cory booker has challenged a twitter critic who says providing proper nutrition is not a responsibility of the government. booker tweeted lets you and i try to live on food stamps in

cradle, and he was not happy. >> not happeny. >> so he was up about every hour but that's okay. that's part of all of this. >> bill was just saying he's a big eater. >> eats like a horse, almost 17 pounds, born at 7.5 and more than doubled his weight in three months which is great. >> parenthood obviously really suits you. giuliana, we always want to check in and see how you're doing and feeling after everything you've been through. >> yeah. >> so much has happened in a year or so. >> it's wild. it really is wild when i look back, and i watch this footage actually and i just can't believe it, you know. that feels like so long ago that we held him, you know, in our arms for the first time which is three months ago, but i'm great. i'm terrific, you know. i beat the cancer so far, and i go every three months for blood work. i take medicine and so i feel very lucky to be here. >> i wanted to mention actually, another young lady, 24-year-old ellen rose in a miss america contest from d.c., i think she ran as representing maryland. >> yeah. >> but she announced to the world that she's going to have a double mastectomy because breast cancer really runs in her

family. i know you reached out to her. >> i did. she said she followed me on twitter, so i dm'd her and we spoke on the phone the other day, good for you, for getting out of there and getting in front of your health and being an inspiration to young women. young women will look at her and say, wow, you know, she's choosing her health over vanity. >> we're here, of course, because season five of your show starts. you've done so much. you've lived your life so publicly for good and for bad. how is that going to change as you go forward, especially with the baby? i'm sure that's something you guys have talked about. >> i think having a baby has changed our lives dramatically, and we'll evaluate it and this particular episode that airs tonight we do show the birth of him, and i think we'll just see where we go from here, whether he lives his life with the cameras on or not, is yet to be determined, but we thought we owed it to all the people on this journey with us to show them, you know, that one in six couples struggle with

back now at 8:17 with our special series "thanks and giving" where we highlight the work of st. jude's research hospital. it's celebrating its 50th an ver versery and today jenna bush hager is here with a very touching story. >> good morning, matt. the survival rate for a child surviving leukemia is 90%. my grandparents had a doubt their died of leukemia, and my grandfather wrote this touching letter about this devastating loss. >> there is about our house and knee, the running pulsating restlessness of the four boys. all this wonder needs a counterpart. we need a legitimate christmas angel. we need a girl. >> the girl, my aunt, robin bush, was born on december 20th,

1949. two years younger than my dad, my grandparent's little girl was a prized joy. >> gampy and i were very young, and it was a very big day for us, beautiful little girl. >> reporter: her sweet soul and girly calm filled their home with warmth. >> she was quiet and gentle, and she had lovely little blond curls. >> reporter: at only 3 their gentle girl began to change. her energy waned. how could you first tell she was getting sick? >> because she was listless. didn't want to do anything. just wanted to rest, go out and watch cars go by, so i called the doctor and i said can i bring robin out. i think she has spring fever and the doctor sort of laughed, and we went out and she had a few bruises on her and the doctor took a blood test and said i'll call you. >> that call led to devastating news. >> she told that is robin had leukemia. what do you do for leukemia?

well, she said, you don't do anything. she's going to die, and we said, no, i don't think so. and she said my advice is take her home, love her and in about two weeks she will be gone. >> reporter: he decided their love alone wasn't enough and took robin across the country to a hospital willing to try treatment on a child. >> they took bone marrow tests which were painful. a lot of blood. they put her on chemo, and poor gampy, every time she got a blood transfusion she's have to leave the room. >> reporter: seven months later when she was almost 4 robin died. >> i was combing her hair and holding her hand. i saw that little body. i saw her spirit go. out of despair a glimpse of hope. how did you decide to donate her body to research?

>> it wasn't hard. i think it made gampy and me feel something good is coming out of this precious little life and today, almost nobody dies of leukemia. >> reporter: st. jude's children's research hospital was founded nearly a decade after robin's death. in 1991 my grandmother visited st. jude's. >> what on earth could be better in the eyes of god than a hospital that saves children's lives. >> reporter: now i was thrilled to get an invitation from marlo thomas to see the progress that's been made over the years. she explained that the first doctors here were willing to try new techniques to beat leukemia. >> every place else they were taking one drug at a time and trying it, but our faculty said let's take all the drugs at once and make a gigantic total treatment, they called it, cocktail, plus radiation, and after two years the kids were getting cured. >> reporter: soon after, doctors took the bold step of stopping treatment for children in remission. >> because you could treat them forever. it's going to be so toxic, it

will kill them. >> reporter: another more recent breakthrough. >> i wanted you to meet brooklyn and her mom becca. >> hi, brooklyn, nice to meet snow st. jude's discovered how to cure leukemia without harmful radiation. leukemia patient brooklyn is 3, same age as my aunt robin when she passed away. >> st. jude has just really been everything to us, putting her into remission and keeping her that way. >> reporter: how do you feel brooklyn? >> good. >> reporter: you feel good? the lab i learned why it was so important that my grandparents donated robin's body to science. >> we still have cells and dna from patients that we treated in the 1960s. now that technology has gotten better, we can go back and learn what caused those cancers and why some children were cured and others weren't. >> reporter: and for my grandparents' darling child, my grandmother says even nearly 60 years later there are still thoughts of love. >> george and i do talk about

it. maybe more recently in the last two or three years than before. >> reporter: why do you think that is? >> oh, i think we're getting older, and -- and robin to me is a joy. she's like an angel to me, and she's not a sadness or a sorrow. those little fat arms around my neck. >> reporter: gampy actually said recently he hopes when he passes away that's who he will see first. >> it is who he'll see first. >> reporter: there's a tra tradition at st. jude's to send balloons to heaven to remember those who passed on. >> up to robin. >> reporter: i shared this with my grandmother. >> she's still with us. we need her and yet we have her. we can't touch her, and yet we can feel her. we hope she will stay in our house for a very, very long

time. >> reporter: and my aunt would be 63 years old. my grandmother says seeing kids living with leukemia makes her so proud of how far we've come. she also shared that the stigma of living with cancer has changed drastically. when my aunt was little, some friends wouldn't even let their kids play with her because they thought that you could catch cancer which is unbelievable. >> it is a touching story, jenna, it really is, and how proud, you know, you must be of the work that's done at the hospital. the cure rate 94%, not only with leukemia and other great advancements. >> brain tumorses, gone from 10% to 85% and wonderful, mrs. bush is such a living example of what it was like and what it is now, and there was such a thrill for us to entertain her at st. jude and have her walk through the labs and see what we are doing. >> just a reminder so people understand. the research that's done at this hospital has been shared. they don't lock it up in this room and say only we know how to

to this book, and i'm paraphrasing, he said basically one of the reasons you didn't fit in so well in nashville was your pot-smoking. did you ever consider giving it up? >> oh, i gave it up a bunch of times. >> did you ever consider giving it up for good? >> not really because i haven't seen any side effects that really are harmful to me, you know. i'm the canary in the mine. i'm 80 years old. check me out, you know. >> you said something to our producer when he was talking to you about this book and i think he asked you the question. did you learn something about yourself, willie, when you wrote the book and i like what you said. i've always been pretty sure of where i am and who i am, so, no. why did you write the book? >> they offered me a bunch of money? >> willie, come on, make something up. is that really the reason? >> that's the main reason. kinky friedman came with a deal. i said, you know, you can't turn down kinky. >> you share the pages of the book with some people you love, family members.

>> right. >> you let them write some things about you. did any of the stories that they wanted to tell surprise you? >> no, not really. they were all very complementary, and if they hadn't have been i would have taken them out because you have the last edit. >> your son micah, most of your kids are musicians, right? >> right. >> your son micah said, quote, i never felt as if i'm standing in his shadow. instead it's as if he blazed a trail of lights for me with which to cast my own shadowses. i think any father, i thought i would like that review. >> it is. >> did that come naturally to you as a waive parenting, or did you actually have to work at it? >> i told him to say that. >> seriously, it would have been easy to cast a big shadow over your kids. did you have to try to consciously not do that? >> no. i was trying mainly trying to go from day to day being me and i wanted them to do the same thing, they experienced along with me a lot of things that i

was going through and saw how i was handling it, and hope i handled it okay so they will get some experience on how they might want to handle thing. >> were you happy so many of your kids went into music, something that pleased you? >> yeah. it's great to have your kids, especially if they are good and they are on stage with you and you're performing and people are liking them, yeah, that's as good as it gets. >> i think a lot of people will hear your name and think of the song you did before, "to all the girls i've loved before. ." but you've now been married to your current wife annie for 25 years. how is that working out? >> it's a day-to-day thank. >> want to make a phone call to make sure everything is all right? what's the secret in this one? >> i think we're both pretty independent and we allow each other to be independent and have our own thoughts. >> do you think she would say the same thing? >> i don't know. probably not. >> you are at the stage of your life now where people start to celebrate your lifetime

we're back with our special series thanks and giving, highlighting 50 years of work done at st. jude's children's hospital. >> jenna bush hager is here with more. >> hi, guys, good morning. today the survival rate for a child living with leukemia was 74%. my grandparents had a daughter who died of leukemia. ♪ my aunt, robin bush, was born on december 20, 1949. >> we were very young, and it was a very big day for us, beautiful little girl. >> two years younger than my dad, my grandparent's little

girl was a prized joy. her sweet soul and girly calm filled their home with warmth. >> she was quiet and gentle, and she had lovely little blond curls. >> at only three, their gentle girl began to change. her energy waned. >> how could you first tell she was getting sick? >> because she was listless and didn't want to do anything, just wanted to rest, go out and watch cars go by. so i called the doctor and said, can i bring robin out, i think she has spring fever. the doctor sort of laughed. we went out, she had a few bruises on her, and the doctor took a blood test and said i'll call you. >> that call led to devastating news. >> she told us that robin had leukemia. what do you do for leukemia? well, you don't do anything. she's going to die. and we said, no, i don't think so. and she said, my advice is take

her home, love her, in about two weeks, she'll be gone. >> they decided their love alone wasn't enough and took robin across the country to a hospital willing to try treatment on a child. >> they took bone marrow tests, which were painful, a lot of blood. they put her on chemo. every time she got a blood transfusion, he'd have to leave the room. >> seven months later, when she was almost four, robin died. >> i was combing her hair and holding her hand. i saw that little body, i saw her spirit go. >> out of despair, a glimpse of hope. >> how did you decide to donate her body to research? >> wasn't hard. i think it made us feel that something good is coming out of this precious little life, and today, almost nobody dies of

leukemia. >> st. jude children's research hospital was founded nearly a decade after robin's death in 1991, my grandmother visited st. jude. >> what on earth can be better in the eyes of god than a hospital that saves children's lives? >> now i was thrilled to get an invitation to visit. she introduced me to 3-year-old brooklyn, who's being treated for leukemia. brooklyn is the same age my aunt robin was when she passed away. >> st. jude has really just been everything to us, putting her in remission and keeping her that way. >> how do you feel, brooklyn? >> good! >> you feel good? >> in the lab i learned why it was so important my grandparents donated robin's body to science. >> we still have cells and dna from patients we treated in the 1960s. now that technology's gotten better, we can go back and learn about what caused those cancers and why some children were cured and others weren't. >> one, two, three!

>> there's a tradition at st. jude to send balloons to heaven remembering those who passed on. >> so sweet. >> to robin. >> i shared this with my grandmother. for my grandparent's darling child, my grandmother says even 60 years later, there are still thoughts of love. >> george and i do talk about her. maybe more recently, in the last two or three years, than before. >> why do you think that is? >> i think we're getting older and robin, to me, is a joy. she's like an angel to me. and she's not a sadness or a sorrow, little fat arms around my neck. >> he said recently that he's hoping when he passes away, that's who he'll see first. >> it is who he'll see first. >> and today, my aunt would be 63 years old. my grandmother says that the

stigma of living with cancer has also drastically changed. when my aunt was little, some people wouldn't let their kids play with her, because they were worried it could be caught. also one sad detail, my grandparents had to keep my dad and aunt separated, because they were worried if they played too rough like little kids do, she would hemorrhage and pass away. that was hard for my dad, and them, of course. >> by the way, i love your grandparents. i love your mom and dad too, but your grandparents are unbelievable people. so forward thinking, hoda, as you mentioned, to make that kind of an offering up to science. >> they said that friends were kind of disappointed they donated the body to science. in that time, it was very progressive. >> they were so smart, so smart. >> it's interesting that your grandparents only recently started talking about this. how did your grandmother pull herself out of the depression that you know was part of this? >> that actually is really interesting. it was my dad, her younger kids,

my dad, there was one day they were in midland, texas, and my dad was going to play baseball and this boy said georgi, come play baseball with me, and she heard i can't, my mom's sad, i need to come play with her. that's when she realized she needed to be strong. >> okay, tell us about this. >> we should have said marleau is with us, by the way. >> the queen is here. national outreach director of st. jude. her dad, danny thomas founded 50 years ago. >> yes, 50 years ago. what's exciting is to realize that how far we've come. we have come so far, in those days, nobody survived. now 94% of the children. >> 40% to 94%. >> how did it get from there to here? >> it's interesting. jenna knows, i took her through the hospital and showed her. we took some very bold steps in

the beginning when all the children were dying and different hospitals were using a drug, this drug, that drug, our faculty decided to put all the drugs together in one huge cocktail called total treatment and gave that to the children with radiation. after a couple of years, they started living and we started getting cures. my god. then they realized there were thinking they were going to have to give them chemo for the rest of their lives and if they did that, they would die. it was so toxic. they made this huge, bold decision to take five children off all treatment and see what happened, and jenna interviewed one of those people who is now 60 years old. >> gosh. >> and that worked. and then little by little, they figured out better and better che chemos. about ten years ago, we made another bold step, let's take the children off radiation, chemo is good enough now and

customized enough, we don't need to give radiation anymore. radiation's very, very hard on a child. >> that was an incredible story. great info. >> st. jude really does incredible work. >> the best. >> you have to go if you haven't been there, go. >> hoda's been. >> the families don't pay, which is amazing. unbelievable. >> that's one of my father's founding promises that no child would be turned away if they couldn't pay, and that we share everything, every discovery the minute we're discovering it so everybody else can build on it. >> we love it. thanks. >> thank you. as we count our blessings this week, we've got a southern-style thanksgiving right after this. thanksgiving dinner. >> especially fresh herbs. if you can get away from using dry herbs. i have fresh rosemary, fresh sage chopped, and thyme, one of my favorites. >> that smells so good. >> i'm going to add a little bit of chicken broth to moisten it. then we're going to go in this bowl here, which is our pre-made cornbread, which you can make a couple days ahead of time. >> or you can just buy. >> at fresh foods. >> whole foods. >> whatever. >> okay. >> so you want it to be kind of dry. >> that way it will absorb the moisture. just doing kind of a rough break of this. we want it to look rustic so it doesn't have to be perfect. >> right. >> then we're going to put -- >> might add some stock, though. >> of course, we might. >> use my rubber spatula. put all the ingredients in there. add a little bit of stock, then mix it together. >> okay. >> really easy.

a lot of this can be done, you know, onions chopping and sauteing can be done ahead of time. >> serves like six? >> roughly, six to eight. stuffing's one of my favorites. >> you cannot make enough stuffing. >> it goes into the casserole here. then bake it for about an hour at 350. >> it's already cooked, just a matter of getting the flavors to come together. >> okay. >> then one of my favorite sides -- >> what's this? >> i can't have thanksgiving without sweet potatoes or yams. of course, i wore my sweet potato jacket, but these are actually yams, they have a yellow flesh. >> look at the yams. >> they each have a different level of sweetness. >> okay. >> we do add a little butter and cream and maple syrup. >> of course, you do. >> enhance the natural sweetness.
